The gravure method is generally used for high-quality multi-color long-length jobs that are printed at high speed. The plate rolls it uses are called intaglio. These plate rolls are typically iron, copper plated and a layer of photosensitive layer. After the small grooves representing the image area on the plate are made, chrome plating is also required.
The plate roll of the gravure printing machine is usually in direct contact with the image printing material, so before the plate roller comes out of the ink tank, it must be scraped off the surface of the roller before it comes into contact with the printing material, and then pressed by the embossing roller. The capillary action of the printing material transfers the ink in the recessed holes to the substrate. Gravure inks are generally solvent based. Depending on the gravure press, the plate rolls are available in both aluminum and copper. When preparing the plate, the roll is heated in hot water and then placed in a chloric acid solution to remove the chrome layer and the rust layer. It is then rinsed clean and the iron roll is nickel plated to stabilize the copper plating and the aluminum roll is galvanized to achieve the same day. The aluminum roller is also subjected to cyanide treatment before copper plating, and the engraving process is chrome-plated and ready for proofing.
There are several ways to solve the pollution problem caused by gravure. Each method should be considered in terms of cost and resource consumption.
